Elston Turner eyes Minnesota Timberwolves' title push after roster shakeup

Elston Turner, Minnesota Timberwolves assistant coach and 2025 Tennessee Sports Hall of Fame inductee, shares his insights on the NBA's evolving landscape and his team’s championship aspirations. The Timberwolves are navigating a transformed roster after trading Julius Randle and Naz Reid for All-Star guard LaMelo Ball. Turner emphasizes adaptability as the key to success.

How has the NBA changed under Turner’s watch?

Now in his 30th year as an NBA assistant, Turner has witnessed the league’s constant evolution. From coaching styles to roster adjustments, he stresses the importance of flexibility. "You always expect the unexpected in terms of roster movement," Turner said. "My job is to coach whoever’s in the uniform. We got shorter, so we’ll scramble more."

Why Turner’s Knoxville camp matters

For nearly four decades, Turner has returned to his hometown of Knoxville to host his annual youth basketball camp at Austin-East. Supported by the Emerald Youth Foundation, the camp provides young players with mentorship and skills development. Turner, who led Austin-East to a state championship in 1977, sees the camp as a way to give back to the community that shaped him. "I want to be available," he said. "Something I didn’t have when I was growing up."

What’s next for the Timberwolves?

With a roster that now includes LaMelo Ball, the team aims to leverage its newfound agility and speed. Turner’s experience, including coaching in three All-Star Games and nearly reaching the NBA Finals twice, will be crucial in guiding the team through its transition.
